Skateboard Project:
Shown in my previous blog, there is a rough sketch graphic which swirls around the blocked off wheel area. This caused me to ask myself: "What are other things which appear to be swirling?"
The answers: Flames swirl. Hair swirls--especially when the person is in dramatic motion--as are a lot of skateboarders.
Silouhettes of skateboarders in action are good to show off their swirling hair.
Visually imitating this sense of "hair-swirling motion" and "flame-swirling motion" are the outstretched fingers of outstretched hands.

Skateboard 4: Research:
I went to Sportchek at Yorkdale Mall to photograph examples of skateboard graphics, but due to the season (Nov 1), they had their snowboards out instead. These are longer than skateboards, and have a different shape than skateboards, but there were some graphics ideas so I photographed some.

Skateboard 3:Research:
I wanted to find out if my graphic needed to have a top and bottom for the logo to be read more easily.
After talking to 3 skateboarders, I consistently discovered the following: Most "trick" skateboards, which is the 32" type for our project, are symmetrical in their shape. (Some skateboarders mark which is their preffered "back.")
This symmetry means that I at least have the option of making a symmetrical pattern without worrying whether there is a top or bottom to the graphic. If decide to do this, it would be a good idea to make the logo readable from more than one direction, as is shown in my first rough sketch.
Also, my research established the following: Skateboarders push with their strongest foot. Also, 80% have the left foot forward, and, when travelling, face the right side.

After some research I discovered that not all skateboard graphics bother trying to work around these wheel areas. Nevertheless, I thought that I would do so, thus making the wheels a part of the visual instead of an interruption of the visual.
Also, I am debating whether to include human forms or parts of the human form in my graphics. Even though I may not make it the main part of my graphic, as is shown in these sketches, I am leaning toward the option of at least including it as a part of my graphic. Why? Because I want to show action and physical activity which is so much a part of skateboarding.

On Wednesday, Oct 25, I went to the "Flash in T O" meeting.
Brendan Sera-Shriar's presentation on customized components showed how easy it was to make customized scroll bars and bouncing drop-down menus. Also, with only four lines of code he created multiple rotating objects of various sizes.
Tim Willison's presentation on design patterns showed how easy it was to create falling leaves, with simple codes for weight, direction and speed. It is autumn, after all.
